July was a momentous month. Rogue V5 has finally been beaten!
After 1386 attempts made during more than a year, Squeeealer emerged from the dungeon with the Amulet of Yendor, recording the Gallery's first victory over the original Rogue. The final score was 10337, easily taking the top spot.
You can download the ttyrec file here. This might be the first victory where you can watch the whole game instead of just reading the player's description of it. But you can also read Squeeealer's story in this Rogue Temple post. That whole thread is recommended reading for anyone else who hopes to beat the game.
Also introduced in that thread is an improved interface, called "Rogue Plus". Its creator, who goes by LazyCat, has based it on the Gallery's latest release. It features mouse-driven input. You can play in your browser here.
In the wider roguelike world, Ken Arnold, Michael Toy, and Glenn Wichman will be at an event in San Francisco in September, all in the same place at the same time, discussing Rogue! I am very disappointed that I will not be able to attend. Maybe someone will record the talks.
Finally, my work on the Gallery made some progress this month. I think I know how to fix the problem with different Web pages using different time zones. I also hope to get HTTPS turned on in August.
